A long-term study visa allows non-EU/EEA students to legally reside in Spain for more than 90 days to pursue full-time educational programs, such as language courses, university studies, or vocational training.
– Purpose:
To facilitate cultural and linguistic immersion.
To support academic growth and professional development in Spain.
– Who needs it?
Non-EU/EEA citizens planning to study in Spain for a period longer than three months.
Students enrolled in courses with a minimum of 20 hours per week at an accredited institution, such as AIL Madrid.
– Benefits:
Legal residence in Spain for the duration of the study program.
The ability to participate in cultural, educational, and social activities as part of the immersion experience.
– Important notes:
The visa is initially issued for the duration of the course but can be renewed for longer programs.
Students staying longer than six months must apply for the TIE (Foreigner Identity Card) within 30 days of arriving in Spain.
A valid long-term study visa also simplifies travel within the Schengen Area during the study period.
Keep in mind that you must apply at least 2 months before your intended course start date. Begin gathering your documentation as early as possible and look for an appointment at your local consulate or BLS Visa processing centre to submit your application.
To apply for a long-term study visa, you’ll need the following documents:
- Enrollment in an accredited course:
- Letter of acceptance from a Instituto Cervantes-accredited school, such as AIL Madrid, confirming at least 20 hours of classes per week with a duration of more than 90 calendar days. This letter will include your intended course start and end date. The start date must be a minimum of 2 months past your date of application.
- Financial Proof:
- Demonstrate sufficient funds to cover tuition, living expenses, and return travel (1000€ per month is recommended)
- Accommodation Proof: Evidence of housing arrangements, such as a booking confirmation or rental agreement. This can be booked through us

- Health Insurance:

As of May 2025, new regulations have come into force regarding student visa applications. The following conditions now apply:
- It is no longer possible to apply for a student visa from within Spain when here as a tourist or with a schengen visa. This is only possible for higher education (university, masters etc), not for language schools. You must apply from your home country or a country where you have residence.
- The minimum age to apply for student visa is 18 and over. It is also no longer possible to come with dependants with your visa application.
- AIL only offers Spanish Courses. It is not possible to apply for one of our courses if you are from a Spanish speaking country.

How does AIL Madrid support your Visa application?
Step-by-Step guide to securing your student visa
1. Enroll in your course: Choose the course duration that suits your needs (the course must include at least 20 weekly class hours and have a duration of more than 90 calendar days) and secure your place by paying the required deposit or full course fees (partial or full payment of the course depending on the country of application) plus the first month of accommodation.
2. Receive your official documents: AIL Madrid will issue an acceptance letter confirming your enrollment, which is recognized by Spanish consulates worldwide.
3. Prepare your visa application: Submit the acceptance letter along with other required documents:
- Original passport with a minimum validity of six months and at least one blank page.
- Completed visa application form.
- Recent passport-sized photographs.
- Medical insurance with coverage valid in Spain. Click here to book this through AIL Madrid.
- Proof of accommodation for the duration of your stay (AIL Madrid can provide this).
- Proof of sufficient financial means to cover expenses during the study period (1000€ per month is recommended).
For stays over 180 days you will also need to submit:
- Criminal record check certificate.
- Medical Certificate.
4.Book and attend your visa appointment: Depending on your country this can be done through your nearest consulate or at your local BLS Visa processing centre.

Visa denial policy
In the case of visa denial, the paid amount will be refunded minus €200, upon presenting the official rejection letter from the consulate, which must include the applicant’s details and type of visa requested.

What is included in the enrollment fee? (General)
The one-off enrollment fee includes:
• First textbook and all required learning materials

• Level assessment (outside of class time)
• Course attendance certificate
How long does it take to complete a level?
With the Intensive (and Long Term) Course schedule, it usually takes between 10 and 12 weeks to complete a level, such as A1 or A2.
That said, it is important to note that students’ progress depends on their learning style, aptitude for languages, and the time and effort they are willing to put into learning and practicing.
It can also be influenced by their native language and the other languages they speak. If your objective is to learn as much as possible in a defined period of time, it’s important you dive deep into your Spanish studies: spend time revising class content, complete your homework, practice with natives outside class, listen to Spanish music, watch Spanish movies, read Spanish books and magazines, and watch yourself improve rapidly!
Can AIL help me get my student visa?
As an Instituto Cervantes accredited Spanish school, we are authorized to issue letters of acceptance for full time students, which are recognized as official proof of study by Spanish consulates and embassies. Once your enrollment is confirmed, we will send you your letter along with other documents required to start your visa process.
Certificate of the course
The certificate will only be given if the student achieves an 80% minimun assistance rate and the academic requirements of the course. Available upon request.
Payment conditions
The student must pay at least 80% of the course total cost in order to obtain the Admission letter for the Visas. However, paying the total amount of the course is highly recommended, as this will strengthen your visa application. If paying the 80%, the remaining amount will be paid at the school on your first day.
Medical Insurance
Whether you travel for business or pleasure, international travel involves risk. You may arrive at your destination to find that your luggage with personal items has disappeared, a personal emergency may necessitate your early return to your home country or a medical emergency may require hospitalisation or even air evacuation.
Without appropriate travel insurance, you may be in jeopardy of significant financial liability.
